We are using a completely natural substance in our office, ozone gas, which has seemingly miraculous capabilities. Ozone is a natural way to kill bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungus. These pathogens thrive in an oxygen poor environment. Ozone is a powerful oxidant, delivering oxygen to the body. The cellular membrane of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi do not have antioxidants to protect them from this powerful oxidant. Healthy cells on the other hand have antioxidants and are unaffected by ozone and remain intact. An oxygen-rich environment is created where healthy cells thrive and pathogens die. The bi-products of ozone are simply water and oxygen, two elements essential to life.

We would like to share with you an amazing experience we had with a patient after attending an enlightening ozone course late last year. In addition to the benefits already mentioned, we learned that we can use ozone to desensitize teeth. We had one patient with such intense pain in two of her teeth that was convinced she would need a crown or root canal in order to relieve her pain. She put off coming in for months because she feared the worst. Upon examination of her teeth, Dr Stickney determined that it was simply root sensitivity caused by gum recession.

We frequently have patients who come in complaining of tooth sensitivity, especially in the winter when the air is so cold. We have been disappointed in the varied result of the treatment options available to us. Whether it is a desensitizing toothpaste used at home or a product applied in office, we have had limited success.  However, using ozone gas applied directly to the sensitive root surface, we have had successful reduction in sensitivity in nearly all our patients. Some even immediately! We applied ozone gas to the affected teeth for a total of 60 seconds on each tooth and she immediately had relief. 60 seconds and she was pain free!

Many patients experience complete relief of symptoms instantly, while others have required more than one application. We are always happy when we find a solution that is not only effective and chemical free, but simple as well. If any of our patients have been experiencing tooth sensitivity due to gum recession and have not been in to see us in recent months, please let us know and we are happy to help!

 Be well.
