WHAT IS DENTAL IMPLANT?

Seattle Dental Care

Whenever there is a missing teeth in the jaw (other than wisdom teeth), the rest of the body is forced to compensate and sacrifice to accommodate and attempt to re-balance the tipped equilibrium. One of the options to restore missing teeth, the natural balance and harmony of the body is dental implant.

Dental implant is surgically placed into the jawbone to mimic and replace the root portion of a missing tooth. An implant crown is then cemented on top of it to restore the chewing function. This method does not involve adjacent teeth which means no grinding away of natural tooth structure and you can floss and brush around the implant restoration just like a natural tooth.

However, as great as implant sounds, not all implants are made the same. At Seattle Dental Care – Biological Denal Care, we specifically select the implant system we work with based on their material, biocompatibility, immunological compatibility and design to ensure our patient receive the best there is.

WHY ZIRCONIA?

The implant we work with is made out of zirconia, a material that is highly biocompatible. Unlike the more commonly known Titanium implant, zirconia implant does not cause problems such as oral galvanism, electrochemical corrosion, inflammatory reaction etc. Additionally, Titanium implants DO NOT truly “integrate” with the bone. They are attached to the jaw bone via sclerosis due to the reaction it creates at the insertion site. Zirconia implant, on the other hand, integrates with the bone truly, in a healthy and normal manner, as it does not irritate bone.

Immunological compatibility

Titanium implants can corrode and release metal ions over time, modulating lymphocyte and macrophage polarization which leads to development of peri-implantitis. Since Zirconia is of pure ceramic, it does not induce the immune reaction titanium would.

Esthetic

You do no need to sacrifice the look and health of your gum to restore missing teeth. Unlike the gray metal color of titanium implant, zirconia implant is white so even people who has thin gum profile won’t see the blue/gray color showing through the tissue. Zirconia is also extremely friendly with the gum and thus rarely do we see irritated, swollen red or even purple colored gum around the implant. Recession of the gum is also a rare event to occur around zirconia implant compared to titanium.

In combination of our various tests, specific protocol, supplementation and specialization in occlusion, we are able to maintain a high implant success rate. If you've been told that you need a dental implant, but are unhappy about the options available, and are interested in learning about more our zirconia implant, whether or not you qualify for such procedure, we would be happy to answer any of your questions.
