Aftercare Tips for New Invisalign Patients

Posted by Seattle Dental Care Sep 05, 2022

Invisalign is a treatment that uses a series of clear aligners. The aligners are custom-made for your teeth. The trays are removable, making them a convenient treatment.

Invisalign is versatile. It can be used for both minor misalignments and complex bite issues. These aligners are a comfortable, convenient, and discreet option for patients who want straighter teeth without metal brackets and wires.

If you recently got your Invisalign, here are some steps you need to follow:

Keep Your Teeth Clean

Once your teeth have been straightened, you'll need to take special care of your teeth to keep them healthy and clean, as you cannot simply clean your teeth by brushing and flossing as usual. You'll need to remove plaque and food debris between your teeth and around and under the edge of your aligners.

Don't Smoke

Smoking is one of the top reasons for teeth discoloration. Tobacco darkens teeth, causes bad breath, increases your risk for gum disease, and can cause cancer. If you smoke, quitting is one of the best things you can do for your smile. If you don't smoke, keep up the good work!

Wear Your Aligners For The Recommended Amount Of Time

Wearing your aligner trays for 22 hours a day is always recommended by the dentist. However, this may not be possible for patients. Patients must remove their aligner trays to eat and drink, brush their teeth, or clean their teeth. Patients may also remove them for pictures, special occasions, and for rare instances when they feel their aligner trays are broken. But removing them for too long might affect the treatment progression and time.

Avoid Foods And Habits That Lead To Bad Breath

Many foods and spices can temporarily alter your breath, but that's nothing to worry about. You'll go back to your normal oral odor shortly. However, some foods can cause bad breath to stick around for a while. These foods should be avoided if you want to enjoy fresh breath.

Foods That Don't Cause Bad Breath

  • Water
  • Milk
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Bread
  • Meat
  • Nuts

Avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. This includes coffee, tea, wine, dark juices, and sodas. If you drink these beverages, brush your teeth after drinking them.

Don't Chew Your Aligners

For some patients, chewing on hard objects such as ice or pens is a common habit. Although you may enjoy snacking on hard items, chewing on your Invisalign aligners is not a good idea. In fact, doing so could cause damage.

The best thing you can do to protect your teeth is to follow your dental team's instructions regarding cleaning your aligners. Although you may be able to clean your aligners, you should only use gentle soap and water.

Continue To Wear Your Retainer

You've invested time and money in your Invisalign treatment. Make sure you stay on track by wearing your retainer as instructed.

Invisalign clear aligners are designed to shift your teeth into place. However, this doesn't change your bone structure. Wearing a retainer ensures your teeth maintain their new position.
