What is Porcelain-Fused Metal Crown?

This week's blog is about Porcelain-Fused Metal crowns. Recently, our clinic has been seeing a few patients who have allergies to metal but were unable to pinpoint where the metal was located. The Porcelain-Fused Metal crowns, also called PFM are composed of a thin top layer of porcelain with the metal underneath. The metal components are cobalt, nickel, and/or chromium. When PFM was first developed, it was recommended to patients due to its metal durability combined with a porcelain top layer which provided aesthetics. However, with the discovery of biocompatible ceramic crowns, both aesthetics and durability were provided without having to deal with metal in the mouth.

If you suspect that you may have a metal allergy or may have a Porcelain-Fused Metal crown, please contact a holistic dentist Seattle WA at (206) 728-1330 or visit us at 2107 Elliott Ave Ste 210, Seattle, WA 98121. We will be happy to guide you further.
