What is platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in dentistry?

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)

When it comes to dentistry, many people are exploring the option of using natural and biocompatible solutions such as PRF, Platelet-Rich Fibrin. PRF is 100% autologous that uses the body's healing abilities to aid recovery after dental surgeries. Studies have shown that oral surgery performed with PRF resulted in accelerated healing in half the time compared to treatments without PRF. With this recovery process, it helps patients reduce the need of taking antibiotics and/or pain medicine. So what is PRF in holistic dentistry?

What is PRF, and how is it obtained?

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a fibrin-enriched clot consisting of platelets, leukocytes, immune cytokines, and circulating stem cells. PRF is a natural and concentrated substance obtained from your own blood. During the PRF treatment, the patient’s blood will be drawn out, which will then be processed in a centrifuge to separate its components, and the PRF, rich in growth factors and leukocytes or white blood cells, is collected for use during the extraction.

What are the components of PRF?

After extracting blood from the patient, the blood undergoes centrifugation, resulting in the formation of three distinct layers within the test tube. The top layer consists of platelet-poor plasma, the middle layer is rich in PRF, and the bottom layer is comprised of red blood cells.

PRF treatment has been widely used by holistic dentists. With the increased natural healing benefits and biocompatible properties, PRF treatment can enhance the recovery process significantly after dental procedures, even without the need for antibiotics or pain medication.  PRF is a valuable option in dental treatments such as tooth extraction, periodontal treatment, and implant placement. Particularly for those seeking a holistic approach to dental care, those who are allergic to dental materials such as bone grafts and membranes, or those who do not feel comfortable using non-autologous bone grafts and membranes, PRF is a great integrative option for healing. <
