Composition of Amalgam

Ever wonder what the amalgam fillings are made of?

Amalgam fillings, also called mercury fillings or silver fillings, are composed of Mercury and other alloys.

- 50% mercury by weight.
- Silver
- Tin
- Copper

Mercury is considered a neurotoxin, and there is research on how it may be related to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
Patients are exposed to most mercury during the placement and removal process. Hence, it is very important that patients seek a biological dentist when removing these fillings. During the removal process, there will be mercury vapor released into the air, which patients may breathe in, and fine mercury powder released in the mouth, which patients may ingest. These will all contribute to mercury toxicity in the body.

At Seattle Dental Care, we follow a strict SMART protocol to ensure patients’ safety during the amalgam removal process.
